If you fail to prepare your own estate plan, the state has an estate plan for you. This will probably not be the plan that you want. Make sure your assets pass to the people or charities that you desire, not as designated by the state! Don't allow all of your property to pass to a child at age 18, or to a child that has "issues" or an in-law that will seize control.
